Tasting Notes

The 2022 Madre Syrah opens with lifted aromatics of forest berries, florals, and spice, layered with subtle hints of graphite and savoury, meaty complexity. The palate is both intense and refined, framed by fine tannins and a tightly woven structure that leads to a long, enduring finish.

    VITICULTURE

The original 2007 Syrah planting is the source of fruit for our Madre Syrah. Positioned on a northeast-facing clay slope, the vines are meticulously canopy-managed to ensure balance and produce intensely flavored fruit. Open to the east and overlooking the waters of the Bay of Islands, the maritime environment plays a significant role in vine growth and grape ripening within this unique microclimate.

    WINEMAKING

Syrah was hand-picked on March 15 and 16, 2022. Fermentation took place in small oak open-top vats, with an average of 40% whole clusters included. The wine was then pressed to one-third new French oak barriques. After 13 months of barrel aging, it was blended and matured for an additional five months before bottling.

  • Vintage Notes

An early spring that was wetter than average helped establish strong canopies and healthy bunch weights. Summer and early autumn were mostly dry and very warm, though two bouts of strong wind and rain in early February temporarily delayed ripening. The fruit proved resilient, maturing beautifully and arriving at harvest in excellent condition.
